The Lion King – A Movie or Musical?

The lion king is a name which does not need any introduction. It all began with a Disney feature animated cartoon movie which was formed by Disney Pictures in the year 1994. The animated musical adventure film was released on 15th June, 1994 in United States. It was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and had characters which include Simba, Timon, Mufasa, Shenzi, Scar, Ed the Hyena and many more. The movie had several songs which included ‘can you feel the love tonight’, ‘circle of life’ and ‘hakuna matata’ as the most popular and featured ones alongside many others.
After the massive popularity of the animated feature film, the Disney studios decided to produce a theatrical production of the same. The lion king musical was launched at the Broadway three years later in 1997. This adaption of Disney animated film premiered on 15th October, 1997 at Broadway, New Amsterdam Theatre whereas was officially opened on 13th November, 1997. The records as well as the statistics show that Lion King is one of the longest running Broadway musicals in the history and after seventeen years, it yet remains highly acclaimed musical across kids as well as adults.

The Lion King is roaring back to Manchester in 2015

Since the lion king musical has done record breaking business at the Manchester in 2012, the management has decided to get it back in theatres again in January 2015 with a great roar. This family show did superb performance in the year 2012 at Palace Theatre, Manchester with one hundred and sixty six sold out performances including three hundred and twenty two thousand audiences. Keeping in view this spectacular response from the people of Manchester, the show is decided to have another run for as long as five weeks commencing from 17th January, 2015.
In the year 2012, the analysts and experts told that 64% of the audience was those who were watching this musical for the first time whereas the rest 36% were watching for the second time or even a few of them were watching for the third time. The musical tells the story of an adorable cub Simba who grows up to avenge the cruel death of his father Mufassa from the hands of his evil uncle Scar. The previous successful run of the lion king at Palace Theatre also proved as a booster to the tourism in the city since the restaurateurs as well as the hoteliers generated a massive £15m in only twenty one weeks.

The musical has won several prestigious awards ever since the year of its production. Having transformed from a 1994 film by Disney pictures, it was directed by Julie Taymor who was also the c-designer of this musical. The musical has been presented at fifteen countries across the world and has also been translated into six languages. As of 2014, more than sixty five million theatre enthusiasts have already enjoyed this spectacular show and many are yet ready to witness it live in the theatres.
